Let’s have a look at Medicare Plans in Minnesota.

Original Medicare: Part A and B are what make up Original Medicare’s coverage. Part A covers hospital, home, hospice, and nursing home care. Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, emergency, lab tests, preventative care, and medical supplies. It may also pay for prescriptions that a medical professional must give in a clinic or other institution.

Medicare Advantage: As an alternative to traditional Medicare, private insurance companies offer Medicare Advantage (Part C or M.A.). Additional Medicare Advantage coverage may include gym memberships, dental treatment, vision care, hearing aids, and even transportation to and from your doctor’s appointments.

Medigap: These plans are private insurance policies that supplement Original Medicare. These plans are intended to fill the coverage gaps left by Original Medicare.

Medicare Part D: Supplementing Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage with Medicare Part D provides coverage for prescription drugs. Medicare controls the plans supplied by private insurers.

When can people in Minnesota sign up for health insurance?

Within the first six months after your Medicare Part B effective date, as determined by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), you are eligible to enroll in any Medicare Supplement. You can sign up for anything at this time.

Under this window, insurance companies cannot refuse to provide you with the necessary coverage because of a pre-existing condition and must approve your Medigap application. Outside this period, applications will be subject to medical underwriting, and coverage determination may be declined due to pre-existing conditions.

Medicare Advantage Plans in Minnesota 2022

While HMOs and PPOs tend to be the Medicare Advantage of choice in other states, Minnesota Cost Plans have historically been rather popular among local Medicare consumers in Minnesota. Many Minnesota older adults were forced to switch to Medicare Advantage, or Medicare Supplement plans in 2019 since their county no longer offered Medicare Cost Plans.

Here are some interesting facts for Minnesotans who have a Medicare Advantage Plan or are thinking about getting one:

• Counties with the highest populations: Minnesota’s Hennepin, Ramsey, and Dakota Counties
• Cost plan enrollment for Medicare Advantage in Minnesota is at a 70% rate.

Medicare Cost Plans

Medicare Cost plans are more common in states with many rural areas, like Minnesota, because they provide more options than HMOs. Medicare Cost Plans function similarly to health maintenance organizations (HMOs) for covered medical services received inside the plan’s network. Medicare Cost Plans will pay for care received from an out-of-network provider just as much as Original Medicare Parts A and B would. A Medicare Advantage HMO often does not pay for out-of-network services that are not considered medical emergencies.

Medicare Cost Plans may benefit those who do not have ready access to a large healthcare network, such as those who reside in more rural locations or who just prefer to maintain their independence in seeking covered services. However, because they don’t require members to use providers within the network, they may not be as effective at keeping costs down as HMOs and other conventional network plans.

Dakota County, Hennepin County, and Ramsey County, the three largest counties in the state, are likely to lose their Cost Plans since they can choose from various other options. Some of the more remote counties are more inclined to preserve them for the time being because they don’t have many alternatives.
